The girl from Rio

Ben van Netten, The girl from Rio, Oil on Canvas, 40″ x 30″

An alluring freeze-frame appropriated from 1970’s cult films, Ben van Netten’s piece “The girl from Rio” filters and distorts tangible imagery of the familiar, into the now distanced realm of the private.

Van Netten renders his paintings to a high level of realism that in the privacy of his studio bears few witnesses. Near completion he then uses multiple brushes to meticulously drag the still-wet oil paint, challenging the mediums elasticity; pushing the realistic imagery askew. This vailing of line and pattern creates an intriguing invitation for further investigation to the audience playing on notions of time lapses and memory.
